Public historians come in all shapes and sizes. They call themselves historical consultants, museum professionals, government historians, archivists, oral historians, cultural resource managers, curators, film and media producers, historical interpreters, historic preservationists, policy advisers, local histo­rians, and community activists, among many other job descriptions. All share an interest and commitment to making history relevant and useful in the public sphere.

Public History emphasizes the dissemination of history to a wide audience through physical and digital exhibitions, archives, local history projects and interdisciplinary collaborations. Students who pursue this course of study will not only have a strong foundation in historical methods and research, but will also learn to put their skills to work in the world through internships and digital history projects. Training in public history prepares students for a wide range of careers in museums, archives, historic preservation, national parks and education in both the public and private sectors.

Requirements for BA in History with Public History Emphasis

The requirements for this emphasis are the same as the BA in History except for the following:

• History Electives (6 hours): History 4910 and one course 3000 level or above.
• Capstone (6 hours): Two internships, History 4940. At least one internship must involve some sort of public presentation (poster session, conference presentation, museum display or digital exhibit) based on original research.
• Public History Component: Two courses from above, not to include 4910 or 4940 must include a digital or public history component.
