Japan’s territorial claims are not unusual and are of a piece with the government's stated foreign and domestic policy vision for the nation’s future.
Tokyo’s claims to three small surrounding islands disputed with Russia, the Koreas, China, and Taiwan speaks to a challenge of a more complicated nature, and one that it is important for Washington’s policy planners not simply to brush away if only because the disputes directly impact American security assurances to Japan.
