My current research focuses on the history of the Midwest in the Civil War Era, examining the connections between race, religion, politics, citizenship, and martial volunteerism and how these factors affected local and national history. My dissertation focuses on the history of the Black Brigade of Cincinnati. I also have an abiding interest in modern American religion, politics, and culture—both within the Midwest and without.
