Michelle Morris was born in Richmond, Virginia. She received her B.A. from the College of William and Mary. She earned an M.A. in early American material culture from the Winterthur Program at the University of Delaware. She completed her doctorate under the supervision of Laurel Thatcher Ulrich at Harvard University in 2005 and is currently revising her dissertation “‘Under Household Government’: Sex and Family in Massachusetts, 1660-1700.” Dr. Morris’s dissertation explores the role of nuclear and extended families in the regulation of sexual behavior in Puritan New England. She has more wild Puritan stories than anyone you have ever met and will gladly relate such tales as “Sex for Cheese” and “Goodman Mousal’s Diabolical Erection” with extremely little provocation.

Prior to joining the department, Dr. Morris was a lecturer at Harvard, and has been a Fellow at the Charles Warren Center. Dr. Morris will teach courses in US women’s history and early American history.

Dr. Morris lives in Columbia with her husband (Adam), dog (Indiana), and cat (Tiger, of course).
